Exorcism In Contemporary Culture

Mention The Rite Of Exorcism in a crowd and many people will automatically think of movies such as The Exorcist 1973 or The Rite 2011; a more motion picture.  Both pictures claim to be based on true events; The Exorcist on the case of Robbie Mannheim in 1949 [1] and The Rite on events described in the book: The Rite: The Making Of A Modern Exorcist,  a non-fiction work by Matt Baglio, but while many people believe that events as described in the movies and book are fictional, there is actual historical basis for these depictions, empirical evidence that contributes to the credibility of the subject of demonic possession.

In 2004 the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith sent a letter asking every bishop to appoint an exorcist in his diocese. In the United States, very few dioceses had official exorcists.[2]  The Roman Catholic Church established—in Rome—a course of study to acquaint prospective exorcists with the process, Baglio—a well-known journalist—was given unprecedented access which allowed him to interview neophyte as well as seasoned veterans of the war against demonic possession.  It was these accounts of true life experiences by various Priests that were dramatized and woven into the making The Rite. We advise everyone—skeptics as well as believers—to read The Rite; new and used copies available at http://www.amazon.com/The-Rite-Making-Modern-Exorcist/dp/0385522711

Another book we recommend is Fr. Malachi Martin’s: Hostage to the Devil: The Possession and Exorcism of Five Contemporary Americans,  which as its sub title proclaims, the book tells of the background on five possessed Americans, as well as the Priests that liberate from demonic stranglehold.  We say we recommend these publications due to the fact that many do not believe that such extreme spiritual illness is possible, but it is.  Read these books as well as others by the people that have witnessed unbelievable phenomena first hand, and you too may come away a little less skeptical if not convinced that possession is very real.
